Opium

I

Dust in our eyes
forbids sleep.

Empire's wake erodes care,
making vigilance
cynical.

The Elephant forgets the world.
Tortoises banish time
 burying watches.

II

Dust, again, invades
mouths and nostrils.
It conquers all.

Blonde houris
happily bind us
with cool waves'
lapping touch.

Laughter casts
a pall over
spent dream.

Past pillars
sleep pilots us
clear of nightmare's
stifling dust.

Is vigilance made cynical, or is that just inevitable? Watching anything too long and too close will surely magnify the flaws.

I only took a moment, so I left a mere glance.
