Rant in Response to Attempted Defenses of President Obama's Drone Assassination Policy

Nice to see REALPOLITIK along with historical precedent not even remotely analogous(Barbary Pirates) trotted out to defend a policy of indiscriminate mass murder. "Terrorist" is a term used to dehumanize insurgents. People hate a brutal occupation by foreigners. Torture, indiscriminate violence, mass murder are common occurrences(McChrystal, "Amazing how many people we've killed..."). Afghanistan and The Taliban had nothing to do with 9/11. They offered to hand Bin Laden over to President Bush if they were shown evidence of his complicity. The US was offended by that demand and bombs fell. In short, President Obama was wrong in 2008, Afghanistan was never "the right war". It was just as criminal as Iraq(Earlier this year Obama issued a proclamation making the Anniversary of the Iraq War a "Day of Honor").

If you wish to look inside the heart and mind of an unapologetic warmonger then read President Obama's Memorial Day speech at the Vietnam Memorial. He used the myth of soldiers returning from Vietnam being spit on to set up a counterpoint where he, the patriotic Warlord, lauded them as undefeated heroes in battle. The Vietnam War destroyed millions of Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Laotians for no reason. Vietnam was never a threat. Still, our boys were undefeated! They died for freedom! Their "service to the nation" was valorous! Obama believes protests and lack of political will prevented our mass murdering "heroes" from taking their undefeated record in battle to a complete aggressive war(greatest crime of all according to Nuremberg Tribunal) victory. 

Militarism is bankrupting this nation materially and spiritually. Its zeal for rapine is imitated by our masters of finance. President Obama absolves their past crimes and enables their aspirations. Torturers, war criminals, and financial fraudsters nestle, like the Children of Abraham, in his bosom. Whistle Blowers catch his wrath. In public he makes jokes and boasts(Jay Leno) about drone strikes. He's the face of a Top Secret due process free assassination program not subject to public examination. Why can't he, the star of the Star Chamber, crack jokes and wax proud?  

As others have noted, what if every nation on the planet began killing anyone anywhere in the world because they felt they might be a present or future threat? The US supports terror groups in Iran assassinating scientists and promoting regime change. Those are real threats. Does Iran have a right to bomb the White House for funding acts of terror and leading the effort to levy collective punishment(sanctions) on their people? Assassinate former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Governor Rendell, etc. for supporting MEK? 

A guy posting youtube videos critical of US foreign policy is not a threat to the greatest military machine in human history or the "homeland". The United States visits this kind of psychotic violence on poor destabilized nations(Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan, Somalia, Libya--Muslim nations). The bomb plots breathlessly reported on by our courtier media are invariably planned and supplied by our own security organizations here and abroad. These plots serve to create a predicate for the psychotic violence. It does not surprise me that Americans support drone strikes. Decades of dehumanizing Muslims(by our gov't, news media, literature, movies, etc) has laid the groundwork. The War on Terror is a lie. It is a war of aggression against any kind of insurgence(youtube videos, familial relations, spatial relations too) that dares to even hint at resisting US hegemony. Also, every government loves creating "threats" to justify increased security powers(destruction of human rights, more spending for arms etc).

Well, President Obama agrees.  And that is why I am here today.

I stand here as someone who has been involved with our nation’s security for more than 30 years.  I have a profound appreciation for the truly remarkable capabilities of our counterterrorism professionals, and our relationships with other nations, and we must never compromise them.  I will not discuss the sensitive details of any specific operation today.  I will not, nor will I ever, publicly divulge sensitive intelligence sources and methods.  For when that happens, our national security is endangered and lives can be lost. At the same time, we reject the notion that any discussion of these matters is to step onto a slippery slope that inevitably endangers our national security.  Too often, that fear can become an excuse for saying nothing at all, which creates a void that is then filled with myths and falsehoods.  That, in turn, can erode our credibility with the American people and with foreign partners, and it can undermine the public’s understanding and support for our efforts.  In contrast, President Obama believes that done carefully, deliberately and responsibly we can be more transparent and still ensure our nation’s security.

The Iranian Threat: An Imaginary Problem Will Persist and Require an Irrational Solution

It is impossible to solve a problem that does not exist. The problem must persist and become a field made fertile by propaganda (Quds plot, Israeli embassy bombings, Hezbollah in Central America, etc) to produce a reality. My only quibble is this gibberish:

US troops, with rare exception, fight to serve Imperial need for resource control and extraction. To write such an absurdly naive sentence after so many war crime sprees(Not in any specific order: Panama, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Mexico, China, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Cuba, North America etc..) is quite astonishing. It’s nice rhetoric. But the history of US military action in the real world, beyond idylls of patriotic idolatry and rank nationalism, displays an endless abattoir of Capital’s expansion.

It has come to this. "Authentic principles". Championing a candidate for a few sacred threads while ignoring the entire fallen cloth. Ideological revanchism, hearkening back to original principles lost, will, hopefully, lead to a look past the fog of nostalgia, and inspire a clearer appraisal of our nation's "sacred" origin. Eh, maybe not.

No serious person believes Candidate Paul has a chance, even if elected, of dismantling the War Machine, Inc.. In fact, he himself, at times, finds it necessary to back war when popular opinion demands. He wholeheartedly supported the Afghan War after 9/11, an aggressive action just as unjust and criminal as the Iraq War. A small quibble to be sure, but purists have died for less inconsistency.

Erstwhile blogger activists jumping on Paul's bandwagon still "want to believe" in the system. They treasure hopes this nation will recapture original integrity lost. Alas, rooting for one last daddy figure.

Rep. Paul is the "smarter and better" Reagan of the blogosphere. His failings are charming to bandwagoners who label them "authentic". And, yes, those failings are mere shade set against the billion dollar midnight of establishment money machine politics.

But Rep. Paul has been part of that machine for decades. What has he done other than be a well spoken memento mori for the "Republic"?

9. VP Biden and Hillary Clinton will switch positions.

10. Jeb Bush will be selected as Republican Presidential candidate in brokered convention at Tampa. His running mate will be Senator Ayotte.

11. Economic conditions will deteriorate in the United States and Europe. The United Kingdom will enter into an economic downturn that will make Greece seem a bagatelle.

12. Bank of America, which is technically insolvent, will finally fall when UK, Spain, Ireland, Italy, and Greece default on debt. JPMorgan, Citigroup, and Goldman Sachs will require another bail out.

13. China and Japan's deepening economic ties will further isolate US in Far East.

14. Protests will revive in Western Nations as economic conditions worsen and inequality rises. Police brutality will be fierce and protesters will be arrested under recently passed "anti-terrorism laws".

Christopher Hitchens was a journalist adept at exhibiting his fustian conceit in polemics against entire groups, and sometimes powerful or lauded individuals, he deemed beneath him. People of faith, especially Muslims, were subhuman. He explicitly wished death would mock their belief. An Atheist Tertullian who, while living, thrilled as he envisioned the death of countless Muslims in the depleted uranium hell fire of cluster bombs.  

When Hitchens attacked worthy targets(Kissinger, Falwell, Mother Teresa, Clinton) there was always a haughty John Bull sneer. He railed more against their manner, rather than the wrong.

Warmongering caught his eye as something beautiful to behold. Radiating from Thatcher as she went to war over The Falklands to quell civil unrest at home. Refulgent in Bush and Blair as they lied to initiate a war crime spree in Afghanistan and Iraq to appease the venality of War Contractors and Oil Cartels.

Ultimately Hitchens, like Spengler, was a vitalist dilettante. John Bull's apparent when one notes the "Clash of Civilizations", a la Toynbee, flavor of his fervor for the "Enlightened West" to wage a war of annihilation on "Medieval Islam".

The heat of contest, even slaughter, from afar sparked bonfires in his mind. Polemic was his arsenal. Lauding war criminals was the Drumhead Mass. His pen worked for the God above all Gods he worshiped, Empire.

It is timely Hitchens passed as the Empire he adored, often with paternal misgivings, crumbles to a death he'd view with rapt horror.

President Roosevelt rewrote the Monroe Doctrine to give the United States full rights to intervene in the Western Hemisphere as European colonies fell. The United States wanted to bring about "desirable and orderly" outcomes. It also wished to expand "decency" by enforcing "greater obligations" upon their own new colonies. Roosevelt believed Anglo-Saxon nations were burdened with the task of teaching "lesser peoples" what the "ties of civilized society" meant, no matter how many of them had to die.


In 1948 the United States globalized the Roosevelt Corollary. With the fall of the Soviet Union the ability to implement this policy anywhere it deemed fit was accomplished.


In 2008 many "progressives" heralded Obama as the "next Roosevelt". President Obama chose to favor another Roosevelt. They deserve credit for having the last name right.
